Phil Mickelson, three-time champion of The Masters, sent out a strong message Friday in support of former Marine Daniel Penny, who is on trial for criminally negligent homicide related to the death of Jordan Neely.
“Thank you Daniel for serving your country and for protecting the many passengers whose lives were threatened by this violent and deranged individual,” Mickelson tweeted Friday afternoon.

He also reposted a tweet from Geiger Capital, saying, “If Daniel Penny is sent to prison, by a jury of majority women, don’t ever ask again why men aren’t stepping in to protect others on the street/subway… It’s simply not worth it in today’s society.”
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office charged Penny with second degree manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide for his involvement in the May 2023 death of Jordan Neely.
Penny placed Neely in a chokehold on an uptown-bound train in New York for what prosecutors say was six minutes after observing Neely becoming aggressive and screaming at other passengers.
“I don’t care if I die. I don’t care if I go to jail. I don’t have any food … I’m done,” Neely was reportedly screaming at other passengers at the time, according to witness Juan Alberto Vazquez, who recorded the incident.
Judge Maxwell Wiley dismissed the manslaughter charge Friday in order to allow the jury to consider the lesser charge of criminally negligent homicide. Deliberations will resume Monday.
