I Know What He’s Capable Of” – Russell Assesses Hamilton’s Ferrari Struggles as He Insists “We’ll See More of That Magic”

In the world of Formula 1, where rivalries and respect go hand in hand, George Russell has offered a heartfelt and insightful assessment of Lewis Hamilton’s challenging start to life at Ferrari. As the seven-time world champion continues to adapt to his new surroundings, Russell—his former teammate at Mercedes—has spoken out in support, reaffirming his belief that Hamilton will soon rediscover the brilliance that made him a motorsport icon.

Hamilton’s decision to leave Mercedes for Ferrari ahead of the 2025 season sent shockwaves through the paddock. It marked the end of an era—his 11-year tenure at Mercedes was defined by record-breaking success, title triumphs, and the forging of a legendary legacy.

However, the start of his new chapter in red has not been without turbulence.
With a handful of races already under his belt in Ferrari red, Hamilton has yet to mount a serious challenge for podiums or wins. Teammate Charles Leclerc has so far looked more comfortable in the SF-25, leading some to question whether Hamilton can thrive in an environment so different from the one that brought him glory.

But George Russell, who shared the Mercedes garage with Hamilton for three seasons, remains adamant that writing off his former teammate would be a mistake.

“I know what he’s capable of,” Russell told reporters during an interview ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. “People love to doubt him when things aren’t going perfectly, but Lewis has shown time and time again that he thrives under pressure. He’s one of the most adaptable and resilient drivers I’ve ever seen.”

Russell acknowledged that Ferrari’s unique dynamics—both within the team and in the car itself—require a significant adjustment for any driver, regardless of pedigree. He emphasized that Hamilton’s early struggles were not indicative of a decline, but rather part of the natural process of settling into new machinery and a new environment.

“It’s not easy jumping into a new car, new team, new setup philosophy, especially when you’ve been in the same ecosystem for over a decade,” Russell explained. “Ferrari is a different beast compared to Mercedes. But I have no doubt we’ll see more of that magic from Lewis very soon.”

The comments come at a crucial time for Hamilton, whose performances so far in 2025 have been under a microscope. Despite showing flashes of his trademark skill—particularly in qualifying sessions and wet conditions—he has been hampered by setup issues, tyre degradation problems, and some strategic missteps from the Ferrari pit wall.
Still, Russell believes that once Hamilton finds his rhythm and builds greater synergy with the Ferrari team, the results will follow.

“Lewis knows how to build a team around him. He’s got the experience and the leadership to lift everyone,” Russell said. “Once they start clicking, I think Ferrari will be a real threat. And we all know what he can do when the car is underneath him.”

Hamilton himself has remained composed and optimistic in the face of adversity. Speaking to Sky Sports after the last Grand Prix, he acknowledged the challenges but praised Ferrari’s passion and determination.

“It’s been a learning curve,” Hamilton admitted. “We’re working hard every day to get better. The team has welcomed me with open arms and I can feel the fire here. We’ll get there—step by step.”

Russell’s words reflect not just respect for a former teammate, but also an understanding of the mental and physical demands that come with change at the highest level of motorsport. His support is a reminder of the camaraderie that exists behind the fierce competition on track.
As the season progresses, all eyes will remain on Hamilton to see whether he can tame the prancing horse and return to winning ways. For now, he may be in the shadows of his past success, but if George Russell is right, that “magic” is only biding its time.
