What Lewis Hamilton did to Lando Norris’ trophy after he was disqualified from 2023 F1 race
Lewis Hamilton initially finished second at the 2023 United States Grand Prix, but he was later disqualified. There was excessive wear on the underbody of his Mercedes, triggering an automatic expulsion.
Max Verstappen had won the race, as expected during what was the most dominant season in F1 history. They were joined on the podium by Lando Norris, who finished third.
Given that McLaren won the constructors’ title this year, it’s easy to forget that they started 2023 in the lower midfield. It was only after a transformative mid-season upgrade that Norris and Oscar Piastri could compete for podiums.
The Englishman scored his first of the year at his home race at Silverstone and had amassed five by the time he arrived in Austin. His eventual runner-up finish was his fifth in nine races.
Charles Leclerc was also disqualified for the same offence as Hamilton. Leclerc had crossed the line sixth, so the verdict was less damaging.
Norris is hoping to take over from an ageing Hamilton as F1’s pre-eminent British driver. The two have rarely gone head-to-head for race wins, but that could change in 2025 after the latter’s Ferrari move.
