Northern Ireland’s Tom McKibbin is set to make a surprise move to Jon Rahm’s LIV Golf team on a lucrative multi-year deal.
In November, McKibbin earned his PGA Tour card after finishing in the top 10 of the non-card players at the DP World Tour Race to Dubai. But the 22-year-old will forgo his rookie season on the PGA Tour to win the final spot on the Rams Legion XIII team.
He joins two-time major winner Rahm, Britain’s Tyrrell Hatton and American Caleb Surratt in a four-player field. McKibbin refused to be drawn on the matter while speaking ahead of this week\’s Team Cup event in Abu Dhabi.
Asked by Golf Digest Middle East, McKibbin said he would not comment \”out of respect\” for his Team Cup GB&I captain Justin Rose and Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald. “It’s a team event so I’m just trying to give it my all for the team and see how many points I can get,” he said.
McKibbin becomes the second Northern Irishman to move to LIV Golf after 2010 U.S. Open winner Graeme McDowell joined the Saudi-backed tour in 2022. The LIV golf season kicks off on Feb. 6 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
McKibbin will be in Abu Dhabi this week competing in the Team Cup tournament and next week in the Dubai Desert Classic DP World Tour tournament. Holphist Holivuda has also received a qualification for this year’s open championship at the Royal Port Rush.
McKibin became an expert in April 2021 and won the first DP World Tour Tournament at the Porsche European Open in Germany in June 2023. He also lost to the Italian branch playoff series last year.
