Rwanda has made its ambitions clear with a formal declaration of its intent to host an annual Formula 1 race, marking Africa’s potential return to the circuit after more than three decades.

The continent saw its last F1 race in South Africa at Kyalami in 1993. South Africa hasn’t given up hope and is eyeing a return, with upgrades planned for the Kyalami track to meet the requisite FIA Grade 1 standard for F1 competitions.
Lewis Hamilton has been in talks with potential organizers in both South Africa and Rwanda about establishing an African Grand Prix. Coinciding with the FIA Prize Giving event happening in Rwanda on Friday, the country announced its plan to join the F1 calendar.

Rwandan President Paul Kagame declared: “I am happy to formally announce that Rwanda is bidding to bring the thrill of racing back to Africa, by hosting a Formula 1 grand prix.
“A big thank you to Stefano Domenicali and the entire team at F1 for the good progress in our discussions so far. I assure you we are approaching this opportunity with the seriousness and commitment it deserves.”

F1 cars could soon be racing in Africa again 

The proposed venue for the race is near the capital Kigali, adjacent to the under-construction Bugesera International Airport, which is expected to be completed by 2026.
The upcoming race track, set to be constructed in a hilly area, is expected to enhance the circuit’s appeal. According to Autosport, ex-F1 driver and current Grand Prix Drivers’ Association head Alexander Wurz is behind the design.

Rwandan President hinted at ongoing discussions between F1 CEO Domenicali and Rwanda for a potential event, with both Domenicali and FIA president Mohammed ben Sulayem keen on bringing the sport back to Africa. Ben Sulayem, who recently met with Rwanda’s sports minister Richard Nyirishema in Kigali, expressed his enthusiasm.
